subcard

Yesterday I picked up a SubCard from a Subway. Hurray I thought! They are bringing back a loyalty scheme since they discontinued their Subway Stamps!

Lets look at this new "Collect points. Get FREE Subs" deal:
For every 10p [UK] or 15c [ROI] you spend you will receive 1 point.
500 points gets you a regular 6” Sub, wrap or salad
1000 points gets you a 12” Footlong
That means to get a FREE  6” Sub, you must spend at least €75 or £50, and double that for a footlong!

Now lets compare this to their old Sub Club - Customer Appreciation Card:

From what I remember, you got a stamp for every 6” Sub you bought, and 2 for a footlong. Stick them onto the card and when you have all 8, claim for your FREE  6” Sub.

An average price for a  6” varies from about €2.99 to over €4.50.
So lets say you spend on average €3.50 for a 6”.
Then multiply that by 8 to fill the card.
You end up spending €28 to get your FREE 6” Sub, or the equivalent now of 500 points.

So you now have to spend over 2½ time more to get your free Sub. On top of that, this time they have complete and accurate information on where and what you buy in the store from ordering extra cheese to making it a meal!

For me, I don't want to give them all my eating habits, but when I end up spending €150 a little reward would be nice. Do I even want to know when I reach that amount!! Surely for handing them all that delicious customer data their reward wouldn't be as stingy.

  8. Hi Mary again,

Firstly, what is with the Capital Letter At Ahe Start Of Every Word?

I cant remember where I first got my SubCard and I didn't really understand your sentence.. If I use that card in the store I got it first, I get 110 extra points each time I use it? That's not great when I don't know where that store is and I'm sure it isn't one of my local stores!

    Thanks anyway (I think!)

  11. They really push this as the new loyalty stamps when clearly it isn't - compare this to say Hodges Figgis - e80 = e10 off next book, now that is starting to be rewarding - should be a 6" sub meal for every e40 or something.

Also they won't allow you tea on the meal deal even though it's cheaper to buy than a coke (and is cheaper at wholesale also)

you cant have it in a meal deal because the meal is more expensive than it is to have a tea, but you can still have a tea the will just charge you less.

didn't you have to buy a drink to get a free sub on the old stamps program? surely that would change your maths here?

  14. I don't think you had to buy a drink to get the stamps, but I could be wrong.

I used my card last week for a long time and it expired! Looks like I lost all my points! I had about 1200 (sad face)

Mary seems to have given up the ghost. She must have been warned by higher powers in the Subway Global Empire not to fraternise with the peasant people.

Nice blog. The new subway system sucks. 75 euro a pop for a 6 inch. Its hardly worth the effort of scanning ur card when u can get a 6 inch off the sub of the day range for 2.99 anyways. Ridiculous reward scheme. Im going to stop using it.

    500 points = 6 incher
    1000 points = footlong

As soon as i read that i receive 1 point per 10p spent i chucked the subcard in the bin.

  17. Horray! I can claim my free footlong today.
I just logged in to their .co.uk control panel and see my last redemption was in September last year! and I consider myself a familiar face in the many SUbways in our lovely Cork City... some wil say, perhaps, its better than a slap in the face... but I know they value my marketing info, and I feel the reward is too small... that said I'll be having a free steak and cheese tonite
